About Therm-a-Rest
In 1971, Seattle aerospace giant Boeing announced the largest layoff in company history, resulting in 50,000 people losing their jobs. Among the jobless were Jim Lea and Neil Anderson, both engineers who were eager to get back to work. Turning to friend John Burroughs--an avid mountain climber--for ideas, Burroughs suggested a better sleeping mattress, specifically one that was lightweight, warm, and comfortable.

Taking their inspiration from gardening cushions that expelled air as the gardener shifted his or her weight, the duo took a piece of open-cell foam and sandwiched it between two pieces of airtight fabric. Using an old sandwich maker, they melted the fabric onto the foam, creating a bond that was perfectly airtight. After adding a valve, their prototype was ready to test. Within two years, Lea and Anderson had partnered with Burroughs to begin production of Therm-a-Rest pads, the world's first self-inflating mattress. Under the name Cascade Designs, the private, family-owned company has grown into one of the most respected outdoor manufacturers in the world. Still based in Seattle, Cascade Designs sticks to the same fundamental principles it was founded upon: providing relevant and innovative products, exceptional quality, and service that exceeds your expectations.

  • Lightweight camping mattress for high-speed, low-weight camping trips

  • Rolls up small for use by alpinists, adventure racers, and long-distance backpackers
  • Bottom grips and textured top surface keeps mattress secure in the tent

INTRO

Not knowing my objectives when I deployed to Haiti, I purchased this mat for both sleeping outdoors or comverting it into a camping chair. The construction is lightweight and fits easily into my Tactical Backpack. The negative is that I had to purchase a sac for it separately.

USE

This pad is comfortable, as a stand alone pad or useful when trying to sleep on a military mattress. Open the seal, and the pad inflates in a matter of seconds. Taking this pad down takes about 3-5 minutes to roll, empty the air and then fold again. The outer covering is durable.

PRO

Light
Versatile and compact

CON

No accompanying sack

OVERALL

This is a great accessory sleeping pad for both camping, military operations or even when watching a game (with the chair accessory).

5.0 out of 5 stars Therm-a-Rest to the Test, November 11, 2009

I will be field testing this mattress in a week and will update my review thereafter. Initial impressions are that it is a decently lightweight and small mattress when rolled up. Very nice for lightweight and space saving backpackers like myself. After rolling it out it is plenty long enough(the reg size) and not too wide but will do the job just fine. It won't inflate completely by itself so I blew it up almost to its max and found it to be VERY comfortable and supportive. I am quite impressed with this mattress, it seems like it will be very comfortable.

Only con I can think of is the price and that it doesn't come with the stuff sack. Other than that, it gets a 5/5 for doing EXACTLY what it is meant to do, and doing it very well. You get what you pay for and this lightweight comfortable and compact mattress isn't lacking.

UPDATE:
After 3 day backpacking trip in November in W.V. this sleeping pad worked perfectly. No complaints. Insulated from the icy... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Nights Sleep, May 17, 2010

Excellent mattress for backpacking. I have always slept on the ground because I just didn't think a matt like this was worth the money or valuable space it would take up in my pack, boy was I wrong. I have never slept through the night while camping untill now. You wouldn't believe the difference that a 1 1/2 inch foam matt can make. It earns the space it takes up in my pack. I do think it was worth the $100.00 I spent on it, but I think that the storage bag should come with it. I had to pay an extra $20.00 to get it.
