5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and easy, October 19, 2010

This tripod is sturdy and well-built. The assembly instructions are clear and the tripod was easy to set up. The feet can be angled so that you can put it on a flat surface or on the roof. The mounting hardware that came with my new Vantage Pro2 Plus Weather Station is designed to fit the tripod's poles, and the whole thing went together smoothly. I suggest doing all the assembly on a flat surface (I put mine together on the family room floor). Secure the first pole into the tripod, then secure the Weather Station to the second pole without attaching the two poles. Then you can easily install the tripod assembly outside, and when it's installed just connect the two poles and secure the connection with the included hardware. I got the whole job done quickly and easily that way. A strong wind kicked up after I finished, and the everything is nice and stable. I'm happy with this tripod!

1.0 out of 5 stars Davis Tripod, July 28, 2010

A four year old could design a better tripod. This one doesn't secure the upper pole to the lower one, meaning the whole weather instrument can be lifted off VERY Very easily. also, the spider spindle has zero locking system, meaning zero stability. And if they had just made the third leg telescoping, install would take 4 minutes, as opposed to 3 hours. DO NOT BUY. Get the simple Davis mounting pole and save yourself the hastle. You're going to be on a roof, how long do you really want to be up there? Also, none of the bolts and nuts were the size described in the instructions. Actually, none were either standard OR metric sizes. I have never run across that before. If you get this, dont bother leveling the tripod, this design is poor, and a level & plumb tripod will not ensure a level & plumb upper pole or unit. The weather instrument (VANTAGE VUE) is 6-stars, the tripod....a total bust.

Each owner has to figure out where and how to install their weather system. Our house was lots of trees which can block wind measurements etc. Decided on roof ridge point at max distance from trees. Bought special caulking and lags to bolt through composition roofing without causing leaks at each leg. Been there ten (?) years with no problem. That is a long time with full sun exposure.

This design appears identical to the one sold at local chain store (***** shack). Worth a look. I did mount my Davis Pro 2 on it.
